Subject: U18 Final vs Markham

Wednesday night. it was our only defeat and  although the first half was far from memorable, the second half was a much

better confrontation.  They were a fast, good side and we did not get into the game quickly enough to have an effect, or set up well enough to be in

contention.  It is always hard when, very quickly , a team is on the back foot.  As Henry Skinner says," There is nothing wrong with loosing, there is much to be learnt,  the trick

is ....not to do it too often" I hope that is what we take from Wednesday night.  We had a winning season,

and with more application and a stonger desire to push for the win i think that next season could well see us back at the finals.  This was not a three

peat, but it is Lindsay that has been at the final for the last three seasons straight, and has appeared in most finals for the last 8 years.

We have a legacy of success at this age grade, and there are good reasons to keep working at being on top.  This is one of the platforms that has led to a

lot of Lindsay players to go to Provincial, national teams,  as well as  success at the high school level .  I look forward to next season,

some of you will be moving onto U20, which again should be a strong side, and some will repeat at U18.  i hope to see you all at one team or

another. There is a final note on this game, although a loss, there were several players who worked hard to the last whistle ,  Lucas Hoppe, who produced the first try,

Mack Redgate who ran in the last, Spencer Barrett, through out the game was trying to get the advantage.  Well done to all of them, and the joint

honours of Men of the Match. Couple more things,  please can you take the time to thank the parents who lent or drove cars to the games, or helped in any other way to make the season

successful.  It was always nice to see support for our games,, The Fees, Fourniers, Stacy, The Raftons, The Hoppes, and the Barretts, are some of the

families i have seen out.  I am sure there are more, and finally to the ever irrepressable  Nathan Reeves, Jeremy McCarty and crew, who have made

referees see yellow if not red, but have been quite entertainig at times.  I truly think you should be refs yourselves!!!

The first XV is at home on Saturday afternoon,  for the last game of their season, and i believe there is a $10 dinner afterwards, come out if you can, and

celebrate your season.Enjoy the photos, i will remind you all about the end of year dinner in October 10th.

Lindsay U14 Gryphons successful in first playoff game

Lindsay’s Under 14 boys rugby team played the first playoff game of 2009 against Peterborough on August 22nd at the Lindsay club. This was the third meeting between Lindsay and Peterborough this season and with each successive meeting Peterborough’s squad has improved. The Pagans scored first and appeared to be on the verge of scoring again, if not for a brilliant run by Mitch Collins to make the try-saving tackle. The Gryphons responded with 5 tries and a conversion to make the final score 27 to 10, advancing to the next round.

For Lindsay, Greg Mitchell scored 2 tries, with a single tries added by Will Webster, Dylan Needham and Mat Carr. Mitchell Collins adding one convert. Runar Lorette also showed determination, making a great tackle against Peterborough’s strongest player.

The U14 boys next see action against Balmy Beach in the second round of the playoffs at home on August 29th at 9:30.

Re: Lindsay U18 vs Toronto Scottish  TRU Semi Final August 19th 2009

We have had a few hiccups on the way with the date for the Semi being changed   Toronto Scottish almost made the trip on Sunday, which would have been a shame. So it all came right and a strong number of them arrived 23 players and quite a few supporters.  We showed up short of players until about 10 minutes before kick off, Brett Moxley stepped in last minute for our regular coaching team of Doug Wooldrich and Rob Brouwer, Rob had sent through a starting list, so Brett managed to work with that, and gradually the team arrived so with a few last minute scrounging around to find kit for a couple of U16, we ended up with 20 players.  Very good.

So, as usual, we started with all kinds of position changes, which have also helped to make this such a solid team, forwards play as backs and visa versa. so Andrew Rafton has become a lock, Ryan Uens seems to enjoy himself at centre /prop, Grant Mclean  went from back row to back line,.

The big difference in the game was quality of tackle, Lindsay made tackles, and Scottish didn't. The first try came quite quickly, built up from some good rucking and scrumming inside the 22 to 5 meter line, and then Lindsay went from strength to strength Eric Viera was over the line but did not quite get the ball down for a try, not to worry, it set up a back up try 2 minutes later.  Ball handling was strong last night, and Spencer Barrett put some lovely chips out wide for the wings to run into space and over the line.

The game was well in hand, only a 3 point response from Scottish in the first half.  The second half followed the flow of the first.  Steady work in mid field, excellent defensive tackling,  Heads up to Josh Fee, again, for another of those fantastic try stopping tackles, that have made him an outstanding full back this season.  Only one try from the Scottish in the second half, set up in mid field and a fast back taking an opportunity to run down the side and put the ball down, other wise traffic was one way.  Final score 40-13.  .  Man of the Match, it was a really difficult decision to make, went to Mackenzie Redgate, who switched to scrum half for this game and did a bang up job.

What a good game, we are still picking up quite a few penalties for rucking offenses, however, there does not seem to be any sort of consistent pattern to the referees’ decision in this area, so not much players can do about that.   We are going to the TRU final for another season.  The Lindsay U18 track record is outstanding, we have missed very few finals in the last 5 years, we win a few, we loose a few.  Markham is going to be very tough I want this team to win a title.  They deserve it,

The date is now set at Wednesday at Fletchers Field 7.00pm kick off.   The only regret is that we are going to be missing Grant McLean, as he is now headed to his hockey season.  He will be missed. We will welcome the return of two players back from the Canada Games, Luc Pearson and Lucas Hoppe, so let’s hope that these losses and gains will equalize our team.

All this team has practiced  and worked hard, as the team has developed so well this season, another difficult decision is going to be who will be MVP, most improved  etc., You all must come to the Club dinner Saturday October 10th to find out…..  . And they are all now in full Lindsay kit, Vince and the club thanks you, my wallet, I am not so sure!!!

Lindsay U14 Gryphons face top team in west with success

Lindsay’s Under 14 boys rugby team played an exhibition game against Highland, from Fergus, on August 16th. Highland is ranked top on the west portion of Ontario, also going undefeated in the regular season. The team from Fergus requested the game and drove the nearly 3 hour distance to test what might turn out to be a possible playoff match-up. The Gryphons played their best game so far this season, rising to the challenge and handing the visitors a 36 to 12 defeat.

For Lindsay, Dylan Needham scored 2 tries, with a single tries added by Ben Webster, William Brown, Will Webster and Andrew McFadden. Mitchell Collins, again, kicked the ball well, converting 3 of 6 tries.

Lindsay U14 Gryphons finish regular season undefeated

Lindsay’s Under 14 boys rugby team played the final game of their regular season at home against Oshawa on August 15th. The Lindsay boys turned in another strong performance in defeating Oshawa 59 to 15 to end the season with a perfect 7 and 0 record.

As has been the case a number of times this season, Lindsay had to lend players to the opposition who were down in numbers. Thanks to Stephen Boyd, Jake Porter, David Sorensen and Aiden Jamieson for being great sportsmen.

For Lindsay, Ben Webster, Mat Carr, Will Webster and Greg Mitchell each scored 2 tries with a single try added by Dylan Needham. Mitchell Collins kicked the ball well, converting 7 of 9 tries.

Playoff action begins for Lindsay’s U14s on August 22nd.

Re: Lindsay U18 vs Aurora Barbarians   TRU Quarter Final  August 12th 2009

Rob limped, I limped, Doug ran touch, our contributions to an excellent game played by U18 men.  It is not so easy to pick a single man of the match any more, all playing better and better, with individual games only being outclassed by the consistant team effort.

That all sounds a little sychophantic, but there was a knowledgable crowd watching last night, and they were well entertained. Including, I have to say, my favourite supporters group whose acerbic, and often enthusiastic information flow to the referee was constant and colourful!

Barbarians made the trip, all 30 of them to play this one out, they are a good side, lots of quality players, and I believe not high in the standings because they happened to have encountered Markham early in their season this year.  So they came to play and to win, but with  home field advantage, and an attitude that this team will  play at least one more game this season, it was not going to be an easy.

Not unusual this year; our opposition scored first, but failed to convert, so the return try,   developed from a backs break away followed by solid rucking, was converted and put Lindsay ahead. A second try made the lead at the end of the first half 12 to 5.

It felt like the game had been played at lightening speed, despite constant penalty whistles, there must have been 15 in the first half, and never felt like it slowed down at all.  Needless to say, most of those calls were as a result of increased tension from both sides and the steady chirping coupled with referee"blind" retribution going on.Only a quick break; and onto the second half, same as the first but a little bit harder to see who was carrying the ball on the far side as the light was fading fast.

The pace did not slow down, in fact there were less penalties called in the second half although one flare up did result in double sin bin.  There was a late binning for a dangerous tackle, not well received, by the players or the crowd, as the downed player would have had to have weighed 300 lbs!!! very hard to pile drive that lad.

Nevertheless, the last 7 minutes were on the edge, Barbarians kept up the pressure and did get over the line, a conversion would have led to a tied game with a couple of minutes left, a sigh of relief, the conversion missed; and Lindsay had to keep possession for the last few minutes.  Done, final result was 12 - 10 and we play on next Wednesday night at home, time to be arranged.  Josh Fee was man of the match, not only for vital  place kicking,  some more of his outstanding defensive tackles,  but also for his socks!!! Greg O' Neill put in a notable performance on the wing, with plenty of good runs up the park allowing the forwards to put the ball across the line. Ryan Uens, also sporting new kit, pushed hard and had a solid game. David Beukeboom scored and was involved all over the park. The entire team had strong journeyman games.

Last night with only 16 players ,Lindsay got the win.   Thanks to all of you, however, a special mention should go to Jordan Bannister, what a player, he will be an asset to the U18 side next year, who had been playing at the National Championships all week and had only finished the final match at Fletchers Field at midday, changed kit and came out to play again last night. Luc Pearson, who has played  U18 Provincial Sunday, U20, Monday, U18 Provincial  Tuesday , U18 Provincial Wednesday , and come out again last night, and Mackenzie Redgate, who had also been playing U17 Provincial all weekend in Montreal, and then played against the U18 all day today, came home, ate and played a full game last night.

Subject: U20 vs Markham

Considering the amount of rain that has fallen in the north Toronto area, in the last two days, the pitch was in good condition, just a little soggy around the edges.

Well, the Markham boys are definitely up-town, they had very nice Canterbury kit and looked every inch the designer jeans team. Lindsay, still manages to continue the tradition of non conformity, good job Brett washes the jerseys.

As far as games played, I understand that there has been a disappointing number or withdrawls from the league, which has made the schedule very busy and then very slow. This was the first game the U20 had played in some weeks.

Markham scored early in the first half and the chirpy, loud fan base on the club house touch line, held their breath from there on, or should I say, should have held their breath.  I cannot help but feel that, if the commentary from the peanut gallery, had not been quite so thick and critical of every call the referee made, the game would have ended 3 minutes earlier and without the last ditch attempts by the ref to give Markham the advantage to put the ball down over the line and gain the win.

The match was hung up on tries but was won with Jordan Prentice’s boot, he was consistent and steady with penalties, and conversions. Luke Gledhill had a brilliant run to the 2 meter mark and was denied at that point, Luc Pearson, side stepped, took off, went over the line and down,  but was called back for 5 meter scrum for a knock on.  This would have put Lindsay ahead at the end of the first half, instead it did remain neck and neck for the balance of the match.  Jordan’s penalty kicks added up Lindsay 16, Markham 12.That is where it stuck and the tension built well reaching a climax for the last 10 minutes as Markham tried to snatch a final score to win.

If Markham had chosen to try for points, rather than territory on at least 3 occasions in the second half, it would have been a different result.  The game had some great breakaways, on both sides of the ball, the breakdown was keenly contested, lots of turnover ball from counter rucking and a lot of penalties for any slow down from the first tackle to the next phase of play.  Lindsay won on individual talent, rather than team play, Markham could have won on team play. They did not, we did, we go on, they don’t.  At the time of writing it will be Fletchers Field on Monday night, should be a good one, if a win, one more to go for an inaugural title at this age grade.

There is no doubt about the quality of this side , they are even missing two of their best players in Nathan and Jeremy; it is the side line observers lament that…. if  they would spend a little time together figuring out some basic plays, rather than which cheer to use…….. but all has to be forgiven as the cheer was excellent last night.

Lindsay U14 Gryphons extend season record to 6 and 0

Lindsay’s Under 14 boys rugby team played a dominating game at home against Ajax on August 8th. Lindsay’s strength and speed was just too much for Ajax, who at the end, were down 82 to 0. This win puts Lindsay at the top of the pack in the provincial standings heading into the playoffs.

For Lindsay, Ben Webster scored five tries, Mat Carr and Dylan Needham each scored three and single tries were added by Will Webster, Andrew McFadden and Mitch Collins, who also converted twice. Converts also added by Patrick Tully with three and Jeff Friend with one.

The U14 boys see action next at home on August 15th at 9:30 a.m. in the final regular season game against Oshawa.

Cobourg vs Lindsay at home August 5th

Cobourg has suffered from a lack of coaching this season, we understand that they lost their original coach and only managed to get a stand in  at the last minute, so credit to these boys for keeping going, and had a side of 15 here at 7.00 for kick off.

It really did not take long for the tries to start rolling in, the conversions were a little under 500, but 9 tries were scored in the hour.  No points were scored against us, for the second week running, a credit to defence as well as a lack of attack from the opposition.  This was our last regular season game, in order to secure first place, and a high seeding in the next round, we needed a bonus point. The score ended up at 54 - 0  more than securing the 4 points.   Lindsay's players again showed their versitile nature as we were missing three regulars last night, so numerous players moved around positions and played solid games.

Man of the Match was Ryan Uens, he came on in the second half and tore it up. Making solid runs, excellent technique in the tackles, and then a romp up the field to score a try under the posts.  The only aspect of play he did not cover was kicking, maybe next time he will add that to his curriculum vitae. There wereplenty of other high lights,  but we must mention Andrew Rafton had a terrific solo run up the side, made a late deek inside and off to a magnificent diving score, garnering an award at the pizza dinner afterwards.

Other awards handed out, last night were Brock Burge for the singing car pool, Luc Pearson for his tackle in the Amman Valley game.  Izaak Devos best injury, David Beukeboom, best party for tourists, Glen Eadie missed out on socks as a welcome back, so Devon Reid has now got them.

I will let you all know details of next week as soon as i have them, however, if you are working, or away, please let me know as soon as possible, as we need to know what gaps we need to fill etc.,  and to re iterate, if you are missing club kit, please let me know asap, Ryan, if the shorts do not fit ,give them back and i will find another pair for you,

Well , what can i say except thank you all ,  you all stepped up last night, left work early , made the long trip , and it was a long way to go.  We

were there in plenty of time, ready to go, and 18 strong.  We welcomed back Glen Eadie, who has been away all season since a face injury at

COSSA way back.  We were only missing 4 out of the entire squad! that is a fantastic turn out for an away game. Thanks to those that car pooled. and drove.

It was worth the drive,  the first half was all about territory which was mainly in our end, very tense for a while there, but it was a night for defense,

and the practice on Tuesday really paid off, the tackles were going in thick and fast, tons of rucking and Belleville was very threatening for the first

half.  Coaches had a game plan, and it started to be executed with tons of chip and chase, box kicks and punting into our end,  followed by chase and

harry;  passing out wide and avoiding the crash ball that is Belleville's modus operendi.  The first half ended on a try and conversion for Lindsay

as the only score, which had come about based on the tactic of booting and chasing into their 22 followed up by multiple phase rucking. Well done .

The second half opened up for LIndsay, with two more trys building to the final try to end the game giving us the bonus point.  The defensive work was hard

but well executed, Ryan Uens put in an excellent performance and scored his first try of the season with a single minded charge to the line, defenders

hanging off him.  Man of the Match was Brock Burge  not only for his play last night but for his singing talents which he shared with most of down

town Belleville before the match.  There were many good efforts, Greg O' Neill had some sintilating runs, and we must recognize the tackle of the night

came from Josh Fee who saved a run in try on the outside centre, who was not a small man.  He stayed steady as 13 came barrelling down the

middle and simply put him on the ground!  Brilliant!  29 - 0  It was a good match and in stark contrast to Pagans last week.

U18 Men vs Peterborough Pagans,

This game was one of the few that I watched in many a season, where I would rather not have bothered.  Lindsay has a reputation for being feisty, however, compared to this group of players, they are gentlemen of the quiet kind.

Peterborough were assisted by  a referee who created laws as we went along.  I have not seen a game with two four and five minute sin bins before, and then a deliberate head butt, although it garnered a red card, was unreported on the official game sheet.

I have commented before that I believe that coaches have a responsibility to their team not just to coach them to achieve the best level of play that they can; they need to  encourage the correct way to play the game. Lindsay has that in our coaches , Peterborough does not,  irresponsible coaching leads to a  tendency in their players to resort to thuggary, when out playing ceases to be an option.

Lindsay won through , frankly , as expected, scored a bonus point and left the ground with every one more or less intact.

It was not a good game as a head to head contest. Lindsay did play well, starting opportunities came to Greg O ‘Neill, TJ Fournier. Grant McLean  finished off an excellent 10 days with Man of the Match. Cutting through Pagans and crossing the line to score several times.

Lindsay is to be congratulated, they have truly grown as a side, despite severe provocation, there have been times in the past when this game would have gone to the dogs and ended up as a series of scuffles off the ball; this team held its cool and kept on scoring.

This night the revenge was taken in the point tally, which now leaves Lindsay on top of the Far East and second only to Markham in the entire division.

In fact we play Belleville away July 29th and then we have one last home match vs Cobourg August 5th

Belleville is in second place with only the defeat at Lindsay’s hand stopping them sharing honours,  a defeat away should seal the division for us and put our seeding first or second for the play offs.

Re: Match Report Amman Valley July 17th

Well it has been a very busy time for the U18s,  they have sandwiched in two touring sides along with their other obligations, of league and provincial play.  Amman Valley a feisty Welsh side arrived to play on Friday evening at the club house, against a combined side of U18 and U20 players.

It was a very physical game, that was a bit of a surprise for the Welsh who until this time had run away scores and were playing 12 man squads,  The Welsh did rally and even with Lindsay producing points and continuing to hit hard at the breakdown, the Welsh edged away.  It was tense for a while, with only one point separating the two sides, the score having ping ponged for the first half and half of the second.  Eventually a couple of mistakes led to the visitors putting the result into their pockets.  Jeremy McCarty, again showed supreme balance and put away some marvelous runs to keep the score board ticking over.  He was suitably honoured as Man of the Match.

On the social side, Lindsay was the winner.  The social effort put forth by the boys was solid and relentless, making every opportunity to out party the Welsh pay off.  The billets had the best time and many, many thanks to the host families who made this such a good experience, that the boys wanted to come back here rather than keep going .  Brett Moxley nearly had a van full of political refugees arriving back at the club on Monday night.

Re: Match report for Wallington G.S. July 21st

Originally this was supposed to be at 45 players strong tour from England.  They have been visiting here every other year for 8 years now. In fact they were a reduced squad of 31 players due to the credit crunch effecting their ability to fund touring this year.  Lets hope that this is different in two years time, and they return to the two team format.

A U17 side was put together and in return, a U16 U18 side was matched up by Lindsay.Due to the way years are set in England vs Canada, this was an age grade match up.

Again, this touring side has not encountered much opposition from their other encounters, winning by 60 points, or more, so the match up was expected to be tight last night.  With 30 players to pick from they were going to be able to keep up a high level of movement and did so.  However, Lindsay did match the effort,  tremendous phases of play, aggressive contention at the break down.  There were lots of penalties for holding on, not releasing etc., but very few for any other type of infringement.  That was the nature of the game, hard fought, hard won, hard lost.  Lindsay did get into trouble with the tackling, which needed to be more immediate and decisive than it was on several occasions,  Wallintons fly half was elusive and  scored by running through the entire pack on two or more occasions.

In the second half, Lindsay began to get his number, and the score was closer 12 20 to the visitors with 15 minutes to go.  A couple of mistakes and  the tourists put the score past catch up.  A fantastic 70 meter run for a try from Luc Pearson sealed the deal for the tourists that he had  Man of the Match honours.  Jordan Bannister, Grant McLean,  also had great performances,  Spencer Barrett , with  a heavily wrapped hand came back to play and was a valuable member of the team.  Joshua Fee is on a roll delivering another solid performance. TJ Fournier had a solid game hooking, and Ryan Uens also delivered a steady performance.

This is a lot of rugby for these boys, and they are stepping up.  They had entertained us this week with good rugby and a lot of social support .  We move on tonight to play Peterborough away in the League and then Cobourg at home , the last game of the league before play offs will be Belleville away.

This is our first away game this season, all week Rob had been trying to confirm the venue and time, so finally we managed to get an address from the referee, that we were not playing at their home ground but at Cobourg East High school. We met at Whitney town centre and drove as a group to the school, others were coming from other places and Mack was coming from a U17 Provincial camp. He has been very busy.  It took us a while to get there so with very little warm up and a lot of players taking on new positions, Andrew Rafton played scrum half , David Beukeboom played on the wing, Luc Pearson fly half, and Lucas Hoppe #8.for example. We welcomed back TJ Fournier who has been busy elsewhere so far this season. We are still missing a few players from injury, so our squad was 16 strong

The game was a little busy in the first ten minutes. Probably as a result of the new positions and because we had little warm up. After the first few minutes the game settled and the tries were well developed as well as opportunistic.Close to the final whistle the aim was to keep up the pressure and also to get the bonus point and put away the fourth try.  Lindsays backs duly obliged and 38—5 is the final score.

Man of the match Clayton Robson, had working and ever present in the break down, Rob made his selection at the end of the match.  Honourable mention to Andrew Rafton for settling into scum half and playing an ever confident role in setting up the scoring opportunities. The entire team had a good match and with the light fading we all headed back to Lindsay.

For the second game is a row, Lindsay loaned players to the other side, who were down a few bodies. Bobby Beattie, Martin Simone, Jake Porter and Runar Lorette showed great sportsmanship in pitching in for the Oshawa side.

For Lindsay, Dylan Needham scored three tries, Ben Webster scored twice and single tries were added by Greg Mitchell, and Mat Carr. Aiden Jamieson added to the score with one convert.

Bellville came to Lindsay on  Wednesday July 8th.  There were 25 of them and they had three coaches in support.  They had come to win and from the opening kick had a game plan that they followed  with encouragement from the coaching staff.  It was slow and steady, with plenty of crash ball.  This was directly opposed to Lindsay’s own style of play, so the confrontation was interesting. The Bellville team scored first and early which was a good wake up call for the Lindsay XV.  The game progressed with the two styles counter acting against each other for the rest of the game.  Bellville would play slow down methodical rugby , requiring much defensive play and hard graft from Lindsay forwards.  The opportunities came, Brock Burge fed well from the scrum half position and began to help the backs find the gaps.

The trade in trys was ping pong,  Joshua Fee had two well set up runs to the outside and across the line for impressive runs. Made all the more so as Lindsay spent 20 minutes of the match playing with 14 men.The game ended with bonus points for both sides with 4 tries for Belleville and 6 tries for Lindsay.  A final score of 35 to 22 and Belleville went home disappointed and promising a very hard return game in a few weeks.

Joshua Fee was man of the match, Brock Burge has an honourable mention. The team is enjoying the benfit of not only having Rob Brouwer as the head coach, but he has now drafted in some additional support from Doug Wooldrige and JT Robotham.  Doug’s mandate is not only as assistant coach but he is also showing a  talent for operating the line marker, something both teams appreciated!!!The return game will be excellent  Belleville is a strong side and lost as Lindsay did take their opportunities; in the end outscored them, it could have gone the other way, if Belelville had  played  to the ref as well as Lindsay did.It will be an interesting rematch. July 29th away at Belleville.  Our next game is July 15th away vs Cobourg.   Followed by July 18th vs Amman valley at home. July 21st Vs Wallington,  July 22nd vs Peterborough,

Lindsay U14 Gryphons defeat Markham 34-19

Lindsay’s Under 14 boys rugby team showed up to play in Markham, on a beautiful summer day, on June 27th, handing the Markham side a 34 to 19 defeat.

Lindsay started the game by lending 2 players to Markham, who were down a few bodies, but our boys soon returned to our own side, as a few Markham late arrivals made an appearance. The Lindsay side played a strong game, retaining possession of the ball for most of the game, only failing to shut down one Markham player.

Dylan Needham scored 2 tries, with single tries added by Will Webster, Greg Mitchell, Ben Webster and Mat Carr. Aiden Jamieson converted twice.

The U14 boys see action next in Oshawa on July 11th.
